The Morden Midget eggplant is a dwarf, early-maturing variety, known for its ability to produce beautiful purple fruit even in shorter summers. Developed for cooler climates, it's an excellent choice for Quebec (zone 4b and above) . Compact plant, good productivity, flavorful fruit with tender flesh: a reliable eggplant that performs equally well in the garden or in a large pot on a balcony.

Why choose the Morden Midget eggplant from Semis de la Seigneurie?

✅ Seeds produced in Quebec – Adapted to our climate, without chemical pesticides
✅ Nordic variety – Designed to thrive in shorter seasons
✅ Compact plant – Perfect for small spaces and container gardening
✅ Good productivity – Regular harvests all summer long
✅ Delicious purple fruits – Tender flesh, ideal for grilling and stews

Culture in Quebec (zone 4b and above)

Start your seedlings indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost (mid-March) . Transplant after all risk of frost has passed, once the soil has warmed up ( early to mid-June depending on your region). Eggplants love the heat: full sun, a sheltered spot, and rich, warm soil. They also thrive in pots, especially with black mulch (or a dark pot) to maximize heat retention.

Producer's advice

💚 Essential warmth – black mulch recommended
🌿 Compact plant – ideal for pots (balcony/terrace)
☀️ Full sun and maximum heat
💧 Regular and consistent watering (prevents bitterness)
🍆 Harvest young and bright – better texture and flavor

Culinary uses

Morden Midget eggplants are perfect grilled , roasted , in ratatouille , moussaka , stir-fries, and baba ganoush . Their size is super convenient in the kitchen, and the flesh stays tender when harvested at the right time.

🌱 CULTURE

Indoor sowing:

  • To start up 8–10 weeks before the last frost (mid-March)
  • Germination temperature: 25–30°C
  • Germination: 7–14 days (slower if too fresh)
  • Depth : 0.5 cm
  • Essential constant heat + very good light

Transplantation:

  • After all risk of frost AND warm floor ( beginning to mid-June in Quebec )
  • Spacing: 45–60 cm between the plants
  • Soil: rich, well-drained, warm, pH 6.0–7.0
  • Exposure : full sun (minimum 8 hours)
  • Black mulch recommended (warms the ground)
  • Excellent in a pot 30 cm+ (ideal 35–40 cm, dark pot = warmer)

Interview :

  • Water regularly and consistently (moist soil, but not waterlogged).
  • Fertilization with 2–3 weeks (vegetable fertilizer)
  • Optional lightweight support (depending on the weight of the fruit)
  • Monitor for Colorado potato beetles/aphids in your area.
  • Black mulch for maximum warmth

Harvest :

  • First harvest: 60–75 days post-transplantation (depending on the summer heat)
  • Harvesting continues until the first frost.
  • Pick when the fruit is bright, firm purples
  • Don't wait too long: the skin becomes dull, the seeds harden, and the texture loses its tenderness.
  • Production : 4–8 fruits per plant (variable depending on conditions)

Adaptation to the Quebec climate:

⚠️ Requires heat (black mulch recommended)
✅ Compact plant suitable for growing in pots
