Why choose the Rossa Lunga di Firenze onion from Semis de la Seigneurie?

✅ Seeds produced in Quebec – Adapted to our climate, without chemical pesticides
✅ Unique Italian variety – Spectacular elongated red bulbs
✅ Mild flavor – Excellent raw or cooked (less spicy)
✅ Good preservation – Keeps well once dried
✅ Perfect for the vegetable garden – A rewarding and original harvest

Culture in Quebec (zone 4b and above)

To successfully grow onions in zone 4b, the secret is to start early . Begin your seedlings indoors 10–12 weeks before the last frost (late February to mid-March) . Transplant into the garden as soon as the soil is workable ( late April to May ), as onions tolerate cool temperatures well. Full sun and rich, well-drained soil are ideal, and you'll be surprised by the size of the bulbs!

Producer's advice

💚 Start early = large bulbs (indoor sowing recommended)
☀️ Full sun required (6–8 hours+)
💧 Water regularly at first, then reduce before harvesting
🌿 Weeding is important (onions hate competition)
🧅 Careful drying = long shelf life

Culinary uses

The Rossa Lunga di Firenze is incredible:
  • in salads (thin slices, wow color)
  • in roasted onions in the oven (sweetness + caramelization)
  • in confit for burgers and sandwiches
  • grilled on the BBQ, or in sauces and stews

🌱 CULTURE

Indoor sowing:

  • To start up 10–12 weeks before the last frost (late February to mid-March)
  • Germination temperature: 18–24°C
  • Germination: 7–14 days
  • Depth : 0.5–1 cm
  • Strong light to prevent etiolation

Transplantation:

  • As soon as the soil is workable ( late April to May )
  • Spacing: 8–10 cm between plants (large bulbs)
  • Rank: 25–30 cm
  • Soil: rich, well-drained, pH 6.0–7.0
  • Exposure : full sun

Interview :

  • Regular watering (especially at the beginning of the season)
  • Frequent weeding (competition = small bulbs)
  • Light fertilization at the beginning (compost + balanced fertilizer), avoid too much nitrogen late in the season
  • Reduce watering when the bulbs grow larger and the foliage begins to fall.

Harvest :

  • Harvest when 50–80% stems are naturally lying down
  • Remove the bulbs and let them dry 7–14 days in a dry and ventilated place
  • Cut the leaves once they are completely dry.

Adaptation to the Quebec climate:

✅ Tolerates cool temperatures in spring (early transplanting)
✅ Excellent yield if sown early indoors
⚠️ Bulb size depends greatly on earliness + weeding
