Mary Washington asparagus is a heritage variety producing delicious, dark green spears 15-20 cm long. Grown at Semis de la Seigneurie, this perennial asparagus offers a sweet and tender flavor. Planted once, it produces for 15-20 years! A hardy variety, adapted to the Quebec climate (zone 4b), and disease-resistant. Generous spring harvest starting in the third year.

Start your seedlings indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost (February-March) or sow directly in the garden in May. Transplant into deep trenches (20-30 cm) in full sun. Space them 45 cm apart. Do not harvest for the first two years. Harvest from the third year onwards, in spring (April-May), for 6-8 weeks.

Indoor sowing:

  • Start 10-12 weeks before the last frost (February-March)
  • Germination temperature: 20-25°C
  • Germination: 14-21 days (slow)
  • Depth: 1-2 cm
  • Soak seeds for 24 hours before sowing.

Direct seeding:

  • Possible in May after the last frost
  • Floor heated to a minimum of 15°C

Plantation:

  • Deep trenches 20-30 cm
  • Full sun (minimum 8 hours)
