Culture in Quebec (zone 4b and above)

Peppers need a head start in zone 4b. Start your seedlings indoors 10–12 weeks before the last frost (late February to mid-March) . Transplant outdoors in early June , only when nights are mild and the soil is warm. Full sun, a sheltered location, and rich, warm soil are key. Growing them in pots is often even easier (heat is retained better).

Producer's advice

💚 Sowing early = harvesting more (essential in zone 4b)
🌡️ Constant heat – germination 25–30°C recommended
☀️ Full sun (8 hours+) for strength and yield
💧 Water regularly, but don't overwater (this prevents stress and flower drop)
🪴 Growing in pots is very effective (dark pots = warmer)
⚠️ Very hot chilies: gloves recommended (Ghost chili (Bhut Jolokia), Habanero Orange, Black Cobra)

  • Germination temperature: 25–30°C
  • Germination: 7–21 days (depending on variety and heat)
  • Depth : 0.5 cm
  • Strong light from the moment of emergence (otherwise the plants will become leggy)

  • Spacing: 40–60 cm (as in force)
  • Soil: rich, well-drained, pH 6.0–7.0
  • Exposure : full sun (minimum 8 hours)

  • Fertilization with 2–3 weeks (tomato/pepper fertilizer)
  • Light staking as needed (for heavily laden plants)
  • Monitor for aphids/flea beetles depending on the area

Harvest :

  • First harvest: 70–110 days post-transplant (depending on the variety)
