Culture in Quebec (zone 4b and above)
Lettuce loves cool conditions. Sow as soon as the soil is workable ( late April to May ) and continue with staggered sowings every 2–3 weeks for continuous harvests. In the height of summer, provide some afternoon shade and keep the soil moist (mulch + regular watering) to limit bolting. In autumn, cool nights make romaine lettuce even sweeter and crisper.
Producer's advice
💚 Staggered sowing = lettuce all summer long (every 2–3 weeks)
☀️ Morning sun + cooler temperatures = best quality in July-August
💧 Constant watering (prevents bitterness and stress)
🌿 Light mulch to keep the soil cool
✂️ Can be harvested as a whole head or as outer leaves

🌱 CULTURE
Sowing (direct or indoor):
- Direct seeding: late April to August
- Indoor sowing: possible 3–4 weeks before planting out
- Germination temperature: 10–20°C
- Germination: 5–10 days
- Depth : 0.5 cm
Transplantation (optional):
- Transplant when the seedlings have 3–4 true leaves
- Spacing: 20–30 cm (Little Gem narrower, Parris Island wider)
- Rank: 25–30 cm
- Soil: rich, cool, well-drained, pH 6.0–7.0
- Exposure: full sun in spring, light partial shade in summer
Interview :
- Water regularly (soil always slightly moist).
- Light mulch (fine straw/leaves)
- Light fertilization (compost to start with is often sufficient)
- Watch out for slugs in spring and aphids in summer.
Harvest :
- Little Gem : 45–60 days after sowing (mini apples)
- Parris Island : 55–70 days after sowing (large apples)
- Harvest the whole apple when it is firm, or harvest the outer leaves
- Sowing should be staggered until the end of August for autumn harvests.
