Every summer, it's the same story: Japanese beetles invade the garden, devouring leaves, flowers, and fruit without a second thought. No need for expensive or complicated chemical insecticides to get rid of them! Here's a very simple trick I use that gives excellent results.
My secret weapon: dish soap
🧼🌱
Personally, I use Dawn dish soap (the classic blue one) mixed with water. I can't guarantee that all brands work as well, but with this one, I clearly see a difference.
The recipe:
A good squirt of Dawn dish soap
- Warm water in a spray bottle or watering can
- Simply mix everything together; there's no need to be too precise.
How to use it:
- Spray directly on the beetles when they are clearly visible (morning or evening, when they are less active).
- Generously water the infested leaves . The soap makes the leaf unappealing and suffocates the insects on contact.
Why does it work?
The soap works by disrupting the insects' protective membrane.
As a result, they die quickly after being sprayed.
Furthermore, the soapy film on the leaves makes the plant less attractive to those who would return.
A few additional tips:
✅ Pick up by hand those you see (in the morning, they are slower).
✅ Avoid using soap in high heat to prevent damaging the leaves.
✅ Repeat after the rain.
In summary
No need to break the bank or poison your garden: a little dish soap and perseverance are all you need to get your garden healthy again! 🌿
